Anders Ahlbom et al. vom Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm nennen ihr Paper im Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports “Golf: a game of life and death – reduced mortality in Swedish golf players“. Bei Lichte betrachtet kommt die Studie, die die Sterblichkeit der 300′000 schwedischen Golferinnen und Golfer untersuchte, zum Schluss: Regelmässig spazieren gehen und dabei eine gute Zeit mit Freundinnen und Freunden verbringen, ist gut für die Lebenserwartung. Intuitiv leicht nachvollziehbar. Die Schlagzeile “Golf erhöht die Lebenserwartung” verkürzt die Sache aber vielleicht etwas gar sehr… Denn zum Spazieren und Freunde treffen, muss ich ja nicht einem Golfclub beitreten. Ausser, dass der Rahmen des Golfclubs vielleicht hilft, tatsächlich das regelmässig zu tun, wovon wir wissen, dass es uns gut tut.

alphagalileo weist auf die Buchvernissage hin, an der Keith Ward sein neues Werk vorstellt namens "Pascals Fire":

God was declared dead by Friedrich Nietzsche in 1883 and will be announced very much alive by Professor Keith Ward next week. Professor Ward, Gresham Professor of Divinity, and a Fellow of the British Academy, who has become well known for his views on the relationship between science and religion, will launch his new book, Pascal’s Fire, at Gresham College on Tuesday 27 June at 6pm. In Pascal’s Fire, published by Oneworld Publications, Professor Ward will assert that although God may indeed have come under severe attack several times over the centuries, there has been a recent shift, which has led to scientists, particularly theoretical physicists, discussing God again. (…) He commented: “Not only is God back on the agenda, a great deal of modern science – some of it developed only at the very end of the 20th century – can be seen as positively pointing to the existence of God, in the sense of a cosmic intelligence, as the ultimate basis of physical reality.”

Zattoo finden inzwischen viele ganz lustig. Schön und gut. Jetzt hat mich aber da jemand auf ein ganz junges, weil soeben erst (rechtzeitig zur Fussball-WM… Von der Site: "[09.06.06] First test successful – Streaming of the opening match was successful.") an die Öffentlichkeit getretenes Projekt hingewiesen, das offenbar ganz ähnliche Ziele verfolgt. Nämlich ebenfalls ein peer-to-peer Video streaming System aufzubauen.

"Was'n das überhaupt?" – "Jede, die zuschaut und also Videodaten aus einer Quelle bezieht, kann gleichzeitig auch ihrerseits Quelle für weitere Zuschauer sein. Folge: Nicht alle, die ein Video ansehen, müssen die Daten aus derselben Quelle beziehen; man kann die Daten auch 'untereinander weiterreichen'. So ungefähr. Alles klar?" – "Ähhh, halbwegs." – "Muss vorerst reichen."

Das Ding heist Swistry, kommt aus der Küche der Distributed Computing Group, DCG, an der ETHZ, ist in Java programmiert – läuft damit auf sehr vielen Plattformen – und nutzt den VLC, den's ebenfalls für die meisten Systeme gibt, als Display. Das Java-Ding kümmert sich einerseits um die Verbindungen zu den Peers und macht gleichzeitig sowas wie ein Proxy, auf den dann VLC zugreift, um die Bilder darzustellen. Installation und Konfiguration sind ziemlich easy, allerdings gab's nichts zu sehen. Wurde wohl nichts ins Netz gespiesen. Mit einem Stream hätt ich ihn sogar aufzeichnen können, denn der Java-Teil bietet eine Option "Recording". Die Swistry-Site gibt Auskunft über die Benutzer- / Client-Seite. Wie aber das Signal in das p2p-Netz reinkommt, über die Server-Seite, darüber hab ich nichts gefunden. Anekdotisch: Chef der Distributed Computing Group ist Prof. Roger Wattenhofer. A tech-prof with style…

Redouan Bshary, Professor für Öko-Ethologie an der Universität Neuchâtel, publiziert heute in Nature einen Artikel, worin er belegt, dass zwischen Putzerfischen und ihren "Kunden" eine Form von Altruismus existiert. Aus dem Communiqué der UniNe:

(…) Dans son milieu naturel aussi bien que dans un aquarium, l'activité principale du poisson nettoyeur, le Labroides dimidiatus, consiste à débarrasser les autres poissons de leurs parasites ; il peut aussi « tricher » en se nourrissant du mucus, cette substance visqueuse sécrétée par la peau des poissons, du client. Comme la majorité d'entre eux ne mange pas de petits poissons comme le « nettoyeur », les scientifiques se sont demandés pourquoi la fraude n'était-elle pas plus fréquente. Dans son milieu naturel en effet, un poisson nettoyeur comptabilise 2000 interventions par jour sur 100 à 200 individus de 30 à 50 espèces différentes!

La réponse proposée par Redouan Bshary et Alexandra Grutter dans le numéro de Nature de cette semaine réside dans la capacité des poissons clients à observer le poisson nettoyeur. Pour ce faire, les deux scientifiques ont mis au point une expérience où le poisson client (Scolopsis bilineatus) pouvait observer deux poissons nettoyeurs. L'un est apparu coopératif, grignotant consciencieusement les parasites, alors que l'autre n'interagissait pas avec son client et donc n'offrait aucune information sur son niveau de coopération. Etant donné le choix entre deux poissons nettoyeurs aussi différents, le client a préféré passer du temps à proximité du poisson coopératif. Dans une deuxième expérience, les auteurs de l'étude ont prouvé que les nettoyeurs se montrent plus coopératifs en présence d'un observateur. Les bénéfices de ce changement de comportement sont indirects : ce n'est pas leur client actuel qui profite de cet altruisme, mais l'éventualité que l'observateur devienne le prochain client….

Le tandem scientifique défend que les clients se forgent une opinion quant à la réputation de ceux qu'ils observent et montrent des affinités plus marquées avec ceux qui font preuve d'un comportement coopératif et altruiste. En conclusion, il ressort que des réseaux sociaux complexes existent aussi dans le monde aquatique ; ces recherches participent également à montrer comment se développe et évolue la notion d'altruisme et de réputation. Dance therapy can be a successful method for reaching children and adolescents with problems. This has been shown in a research project at Karlstad University and the University College of Dance in Stockholm, Sweden. Hyperactive and unruly boys with ADHD became calmer and played better with playmates. Depressed and self-destructive teenage girls were better at setting limits, and their depression was alleviated. For some groups in child and youth psychiatry it is difficult to find effective or sufficient treatment. These include boys with ADHD and depressed, self-destructive adolescent girls. A research project in the province of Värmland, Sweden, shows that dance therapy is a form of treatment that can work when other more traditional treatments fail or are insufficient.

The Spaniards may have been right all along – a siesta after a hearty lunch is natural, new research suggests. Sientists at The University of Manchester have for the first time uncovered how brain cells or ‘neurons’ that keep us alert become turned off after we eat. The findings – published in the scientific journal Neuron this week – have implications for treating obesity and eating disorders as well as understanding levels of consciousness. “It has been known for a while that people and animals can become sleepy and less active after a meal, but brain signals responsible for this were poorly understood,” said Dr Denis Burdakov, the lead researcher based in Manchester’s Faculty of Life Sciences.

Wie funktionieren Witze sprachlich und psychologisch? Wie verändert sich der verbale Humor zwischen dem Vorschulalter und dem Ende der Primarschule? Welche Rolle spielt dabei der Erwerb narrativer Fähigkeiten? Wodurch unterscheidet sich kindlicher Humor von erwachsenem Humor? Diese und weitere Fragen werden anhand einer Querschnittstudie diskutiert, die vier Altersstufen zwischen Kindergarten und sechster Klasse umfasst. Wie das Datenmaterial zeigt, weisen Kinderwitze eine Reihe charakteristischer Eigenschaften auf, die aus linguistischer und entwicklungspsychologischer Perspektive von grossem Interesse sind. Im Mittelpunkt der empirischen Analyse steht die Frage, in welchem Alter Kinder die verschiedenen narrativen Fähigkeiten erwerben, die es ihnen erlauben, Witze nicht nur folgerichtig, sondern auch effektvoll zu erzählen. Die Studie illustriert, wie anhand der Entwicklung des verbalen Humors sprachlich-kognitive Entwicklungsprozesse verfolgt werden können, die in anderen Kontexten der kindlichen Sprachproduktion nicht in gleicher Weise beobachtbar sind.

Eine Literaturstudie, publiziert im aktuellen BMJ, kommt zum Schluss, dass die gesundheitsfördernde Wirkung von Omega-3-Fettsäuren sich nicht hart belegen lässt. Das dazugehörende Communiqué meint:

A study published online by the BMJ today doesn't find evidence of a clear benefit of omega 3 fats on health. These findings do not rule out an important effect of omega 3 fats, but suggest that the evidence should be reviewed regularly, say the researchers. Consumption of long chain omega 3 fatty acids, found in oily fish and fish oils, and a shorter chain omega 3, found in some plant oils, is thought to protect against heart disease. UK guidelines encourage the general public to eat more oily fish, and higher amounts are advised after a heart attack. Researchers analysed 89 studies (48 randomised controlled trials and 41 cohort studies) to assess the health effects of long and short chain omega 3 fats on total mortality, cardiovascular events, cancer, and strokes. (…) Pooling the results showed no strong evidence that omega 3 fats have an effect on total mortality or combined cardiovascular events. The few studies at low risk of bias were more consistent, but they also showed no effect of omega 3 on total mortality or cardiovascular events. (…) They therefore conclude that it is not clear whether long chain or short chain omega 3 fats (together or separately) reduce or increase total mortality, cardiovascular events, cancer, or strokes.

Eine im aktuellen Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health publizierte Studie untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen niedrigem Geburtsgewicht und vorzeitiger Geburt einerseits und Kindsmisshandlung und -vernachlässigung andererseits. Ihr Datenmaterial besteht aus den Informationen über 119′771 Kinder, die zwischen Januar 1993 und Dezember 2001 in West Sussex zur Welt gekommen sind. Die Autoren kommen zum Schluss, dass ein linearer Zusammenhang besteht zwischen den Variabeln. Je früher und mit je weniger Gewicht ein Kind zur Welt kommt, desto höher ist sein Risiko, später von Kindsmisshandlung und -vernachlässigung betroffen zu werden. Ueber die Gründe, können die Autoren nur spekulieren:

There are a number of possible explanations for the associations reported here. Preterm infants or those with poor fetal growth may have characteristics that make them more vulnerable to all forms of abuse. It is possible that such infants may be more likely to provoke hostile parental feelings leading to increased risk of abuse. Early separation, more commonly experienced by preterm and small for gestational age infants, may interfere with parent-infant bonding, although this is unlikely to be an important factor except at the extremes. Alternatively, preterm birth and poor fetal growth may share a common pathway with abuse, for example, through maternal characteristics that predict increased risk of both poor pregnancy outcomes and child abuse. It is also possible that an unidentified confounding variable explains the apparent association. The design of this study does not permit definitive comment on these explanations. However, this study does suggest that any explanation must be consistent with the findings that all main categories of abuse broadly show the same association with both fetal growth and preterm birth and the association is not confined to infants born very early or very small but shows a trend across the range of fetal growth and gestational duration.
